Life Day 23719: It’s Going To Be A Long Day

June 20, 2012 at 10:08 am | Posted in Today's Reasons To Celebrate | Leave a comment

Good morning sun worshipers. Today is going to be a long day, in fact, the longest day of the year. Yes, today is June 20, 2012, National Sunlight Appreciation Day (aka the Summer Solstice). If you woke up at sunrise to maximize your sun exposure, you would have 14 hours 46 minutes and 53 seconds to age yourself prematurely, give yourself Melanoma, and don’t forget about the chance to experience sunstroke. Don’t let this golden opportunity pass you by, the days are only going to get shorter for the rest of the year. Better get started, as of the time of this post, you only have a little more than 10 hours of sunlight remaining.

On this day in 1893, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the ax murders of her father and step mother in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Investigators never found the murder weapon, and there was no blood evidence.  This story gave rise to the popular childhood rhyme:
Lizzie Borden took an ax;
and gave her mother forty whacks.
And when she saw what she had done;
she gave her father forty-one.
Can you imagine the “media circus” that would surround a case like this these days? Nancy Grace and Greta Van Susetren would be salivating at the “ratings” opportunity.

Also on this date in 1782, Congress approved the Great Seal of the United States, with the eagle as its symbol. On this day in 1967, Muhammad Ali was convicted of refusing induction into the Armed Forces (the decision was later overturned). And, on this day in 1975, the blockbuster movie Jaws debuted in theaters.

If today is your birthday, you share it with the following people of note: Errol Flynn (1909), Audie Murphy (1924), Chet Atkins (1924), Martin Landau (1928), Brian (the Beach Boys) Wilson (1942), Anne Murray (1945), Bob (This Old House) Vila (1946), Lionel Richie (1949), John Goodman (1952), and Nicole Kidman (1967).

And, of course, this post won’t be complete until I share the food related holiday for today, which is National Vanilla Milkshake Day. After you have baked yourself to a nice golden brown, and sufficiently  recovered from your sunstroke, enjoy a cool, refreshing Vanilla Milkshake. Ah. Now your day is complete.
