Life Day 23722: Baby Boomers Recognition Day

Good morning “oldschoolers”. Today is Saturday, June 23, 2012. On this date in 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes received a patent for the typewriter, which he called a Type-Writer. Other types of typewriters had been around since the early 1700’s, but his was the first to be both practical and commercially successful. Part of that invention was his QWERTY keyboard. Unlike the typewriter, his QWERTY keyboard is used to this day. How many of you still have a typewriter in your home? My old Royal, which got me through high school, college, and my first few years of military service has long since been discarded.
On this date in 1947, the Senate joined the House of Representatives in over-riding President Harry S. Truman’s veto of the Taft-Hartley Act, which limits the activities and power of labor Unions, especially those which affect interstate commerce. It is the act that President Ronald Reagan used to break up the Air Traffic Controllers Union (PATCO) strike in the 1980’s.
Furthermore, on this date in 1989, the movie Batman was released in theaters nationwide. In my humble opinion, it was by far the best of the Batman movies.

If you were born on this day, you share your birthday with the following people of note: Alan (co-creator of the first computer) Turning (1912), Bob Fosse (1927), June Carter Cash (1929), Wilma Rudolph (1940), Rosetta (the Orlons) Hightower (1944), Clarence Thomas (1948), and Frances (Fargo) McDormand (1957).

The holiday today is Baby Boomers Recognition Day. We Baby Boomers have witnessed a significant number of historical events. We saw the transition from radio to television, and went from vinyl records to 8-track tapes, to cassette, to CD’s. We were around for the dawn of the ‘computer age’. We saw the first man go into space, and saw man’s first walk on the moon. We survived Viet Nam, the Civil Rights protests, student unrest, Watergate, and even the Carter Presidency. And I have just scratched the surface. We are now rapidly approaching retirement age, or are already retired. Today is the day to recognize our many accomplishments and contributions to society.
The food-related holiday today is National Pecan Sandy Day. As you sit around contemplating Baby Boomers and their accomplishments and what they bore witness to this evening, have a Pecan Sandy or two, or three with a cool refreshing glass of milk.
