Life Day 23919: Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit…….

January 6, 2013 at 12:01 am | Posted in Today's Reasons To Celebrate | Leave a comment

Good morning you old farts. Today is Sunday, January 6th, 2013. I am beginning with the food “holiday” today because as soon as I saw that it was National Bean Day, the BLOG practically titled itself. Beans are a healthy and tasty food if prepared correctly. There are a wide variety of beans from which to choose. Have some of your favorite for dinner tonight. I have some pinto beans simmering in beef broth with ham and onion in my Crock Pot right now. I’ll make some corn bread later to serve with them.
Another “holiday” today is Epiphany Day or Three Kings Day. It is the Twelfth Day of Christmas, and the day that the three Magi/Kings/Wise Men saw the baby Jesus and announced his birth to the world. Western religions tend to emphasize the arrival of the arrival of the Three Kings, whereas Eastern religions put more emphasis on the Baptism of the baby Jesus.
Some historical events which occurred on this date are:
In 1759, George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis.
In 1838, Samuel Morse demonstrated the telegraph to the public for the first time.
In 1912, New Mexico became the 47th U.S. state.
In 1952, “Peanuts” debuted in Sunday newspapers nationwide.
In 1963, “Wild Kingdom” with Marlin Perkins premiered on NBC.
In 1994, Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by assailants at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Tanya Harding’s ex-husband and three others were later convicted and sentenced to prison for the attack.
In 1999, the 106th Congress opened. The first item on the agenda was the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton.
And, also in 1999, Bob Newhart received a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame.
If today is your birthday, you share it with the following distinguished denizens:
Joan of Arc, 1412.
Carl Sandburg, 1878.
Tom (early Western movie star) Mix, 1880.
Danny Thomas, 1912.
Loretta Young, 1913.
John DeLorian, 1925.
Bonnie (“One Day at A Time”) Franklin, 1944.
Rowan Atkinson, 1955.
Nancy (LPGA) Lopez (Knight), 1957.
And, Kathy (Sister Sledge) Sledge, 1959.
