What’s the Word #28 – Sophrosyne

Today’s word is sophrosyne (suhfrosuh-nee). Sophrosyne is a noun meaning: moderation; discretion; prudence; soundness of mind. 

Example sentence:

The quality I look for most in a Presidential candidate is sophrosyne…a quality lacking in all of the current Presidential contenders, in my opinion.

The origin of the word sophrosyne stems from the Greek sṓphrōn meaning – prudent.  The quality of wise moderation; Greek, “prudence, moderation in desires,discretion, temperance,” from sophron “of sound mind, prudent, temperate.” Sophrosyne entered English in the late 1800’s.
