January 3rd – Life is Terminal

January 3, 2017 at 12:01 am | Posted in Today's Reasons To Celebrate | Leave a comment

January is one of the newer months to the calendar we know today. It was named after the God of Beginnings and transitions, Janus.  In Latin, Januarius means the month of Janus.  It was added to the calendar with 29 days around 713 BC by King Numa Pompilius to conform with the lunar calendar. Julius Caesar gave it the 31 days when he created the Julian Calendar, and it still has 31 days after the transition to the modern Gregorian calendar.

Remember You Die Day (Memento Mori)

One of the cruel ironies of life is that no one gets out alive. Remember You Die Day serves to remind us of that fact. Although this subject may seem a bit morbid, this holiday is not meant to bring you down. Quite the contrary, Remember You Die Day is intended to remind us of our own mortality so that we can live our lives accordingly.
When the milk in your refrigerator is nearing its expiration date what do you do? Do you throw it out or do you start making milkshakes and smoothies and eating cereal so that it doesn’t go to waste? The same thing applies to life. Like that milk, we all have an expiration date, but our expiration date isn’t printed on the carton so that we know when it is. We never know when that metaphorical bus is going to slam into us, so Remember You Die Day reminds us to live life to the fullest before we have to pay our fare.
We all have obligations and we all have stress, but, we shouldn’t let that dominate our lives. Take some time out for yourself each day to do something that you absolutely enjoy doing, even if only for a few moments. We all have a final day coming sooner or later, so let’s enjoy this thing called life while we’re here to appreciate it.

National Fruitcake Toss Day

I am not a big fan of fruitcake, especially those dense, sickeningly sweet lumps of industrial waste that one can buy in the stores during the Christmas season. I swear that those fruitcakes have a half-life equivalent to that of Plutonium. After the Apocalypse, whatever life form re-discovers this planet will find two things; Cockroaches, and fruitcake. They will find both because even cockroaches find fruitcake indigestible.
Anyway, to celebrate National Fruitcake Toss Day, grab that fruitcake that Aunt Martha gave you for Christmas this year, (and if you haven’t yet re-gifted it, the one she gave you last year as well), gather a few friends with a similar dilemma, and go to a large vacant field. Then have a contest to see who can toss their fruitcake the farthest. What does the winner receive? What else, a fruitcake. WARNING: Please use extreme caution when the actual “tossing” begins. If a tossed fruitcake accidentally hits a spectator, it could cause serious bodily injury or death.

Festival of Sleep Day

Festival of Sleep Day is actually a bit confusing. How the heck are you supposed to sleep during a festival? What it actually means is that if you get a chance to get an extra 40 winks today, do so. The holidays are over, and you are probably exhausted, so you deserve it. Just do not do this at work… lest it prove to be fatal to your employment status.

Humiliation Day

No, Humiliation Day does not mean that you should deliberately set out to humiliate someone. In fact, it means the exact opposite. Go out of your way to avoid humiliating someone (including yourself) today, even if you feel they deserve it.
